Learning Support (LS)

What does Learning Support mean?

Learning Support (LS) refers to resources, strategies, and personnel to help students overcome barriers to learning, ensuring equal opportunity for success by providing targeted help in areas like reading, math, language (especially English Language acquisition), social skills, and executive functions, often through one-on-one assistance or tailored interventions.  Indeed, Learning Support creates inclusive environments and support of diverse needs, from bridging gaps between the student and the curriculum to challenging high-achievers, ensuring all students reach their potential.

What is unique about LS at BHS?

At BHS, we embrace neurodiversity.  We recognize that traditional, neurotypical educational models do not allow all students to thrive.  We see neurodiversity not as a deficit, but as a powerful and often untapped strength.  With the right support, students are empowered to understand how they learn best, build self-advocacy skills, develop confidence, take ownership of their learning, and move beyond the feeling of “not fitting into a b box."

Learning Support Department

The LS Department at BHS is composed of learning support specialists who provide a comprehensive range of services designed to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of our diverse student body.  Support is highly individualized and may include personalized learning plans, academic accommodations, small-group executive functioning support focused on skills such as organization and time management, small-group academic support for students with learning differences, and in-class interventions.  To ensure holistic support, the LS Department works closely with students to promote thoughtful integration into our school culture.

In collaboration with families, faculty, the Social & Emotional Wellbeing counseling team, and English Language Learner Department, the LS Department at BHS takes a holistic approach to student success.  By strengthening self-awareness, resilience, and independence, we ensure that students are not only supported in the classroom, but also equipped with the skills they need to thrive beyond BHS and into life.
